This histogram shows monthly rainfall in the region of Bourgogne (in yellow) and in the properties of Mas Martinet (in red). Blue represents the amount of water supplied by irrigation.
Spring in El Priorat was quite wet in comparison with other years. It rained even more than in Bourgogne. This meant that vines did not need any more water until July.
We started irrigating in April because from the beginning of that year, rainfall amounted to scarcely 50 litres. In mid-May we ran out of water, the system of communicating water ponds was not ready yet, and we couldn't supply any more water to the vines.
When comparing that spring in the two regions things are very clear: until May there was twice as much rain in Bourgogne as in Mas Martinet. Some technical problems with our irrigation system left Mas Martinet without any water in June and again we saw how rain was concentrated in autumn.
In winter the water tanks could be filled up and that helped us cope with the terrible summer that brought just 8 litres in 3 months. Vineyards in Bourgogne received more than twice as much water as ours.
